Frequently
Asked Questions About
ARTHRIX® for Dogs and Cats
Q: What
is ARTHRIX® for Dogs and Cats?
A: ARTHRIX for
Dogs and Cats is an exciting combination of five distinct nutrients
which work together to help joint movement in older or injured dogs and
cats. More information about the ingredients of ARTHRIX is found by
clicking on our Ingredients page.
ARTHRIX has been used safely by thousands of people and is commonly
prescribed by veterinarians under our veterinarian labels COMFORT MSM
and COMFORT MSM Plus.
Q: Why would I select ARTHRIX®
Plus over regular ARTHRIX? While
our regular strength
A: ARTHRIX is the ideal supplement for the
long-term joint maintenance of dogs and cats of any age, ARTHRIX Plus
for Dogs was specifically designed as an "extra strength"
veterinary product to help older dogs with severe joint problems which
may develop as your pet ages, or following surgery or an accident. It
was formulated for dog taste, but is safe to give to cats as well.
Q: Should/can I give my pet any other supplement or
medication together with ARTHRIX®?
A. While it is safe to give ARTHRIX together
with a vet-prescribed drug, we do not advise it as it makes it
impossible to know which product is actually helping your pet the
most. We do not recommend giving ARTHRIX together with other joint
relief products, as we cannot predict what interactions (if any) may
occur with any of the ingredients in products that are not produced by
KALA Health. It is, however, safe and advisable to give ARTHRIX
together with either DERMATRIX of FORTRIX (or both) as these supplements will not
interfere with one another.
Q: What
is the CHEAPEST way to purchase ARTHRIX® for Dogs and Cats?
A: A single
bottle of a ARTHRIX 60-tablet costs $27.95 plus shipping (typically
about $6.40). However, if you take advantage of the various
promotional offers such as free shipping with purchases over $100, and
20% discount when you join our auto-shipping program, as well as one of
our quantity discount offers, then you can reduce your costs per tablet
by as much as 50% and pay no shipping charges !
Q: What does ARTHRIX®
do for my pet?
A: ARTHRIX for
Dogs and Cats works on different fronts: it provides the building blocks
for the restoration of cartilage, thereby improving joint mobility and
reduce pain. It is also a potent anti-inflammatory product which allows
your pet to better use its own healing system. The nutrients contained
in ARTHRIX for Dogs and Cats allow your pet to better cope with age
related discomforts. ARTHRIX for Dogs and Cats combines the most
powerful nutrients on the market today to improve the overall well-being
of your pet, young or old. It is completely safe and designed for the
long-term joint maintenance of your senior or injured dog or cat, as
well as a arthritis preventative for larger dog breeds who often develop
joint problems later in life.
Q: How is the amount
of Glucosamine and Ester C calculated against the human equivalent
amount?
A: Glucosamine: A
mature individual (say 175 lbs) should take about 1500 mg glucosamine
per day, so that is about 8.5 mg per pound per day. We add 150 mg per
approx. 15 to 20 lbs of animal weight, which is about 7.5 to 10 mg per
pound per day. These are approximate figures, but you can see the
comparison is pretty good.
Ester C: A mature
individual (say 175 lbs) should take about 500 mg Ester C per day. Ester
C is about 4 times as strong as vitamin C (visit our Ester C page for
more information: www.kalahealth.com/esterc.htm)
so that is the equivalent of 2 grams vitamin C per day. So that is about
3 mg of Ester C per pound of human body weight per day. We add 50 mg per
approx. 15 to 20 lbs of animal weight, which is about 2.5 to 3.5 mg per
pound per day.
Q: What's the difference between Glucosamine HCl and
Glucosamine Sulphate?
A: Both Hydrochloride and Sulfate stabilize the
glucosamine molecule into a solid form. In solution these molecules
dissociates ("breaks apart") into glucosamine ions and either
hydrogen and chloride ions, or sulfate ions (both of which are present
anyway in the body and do not contribute or do any harm). It is the
glucosamine ions that are important. The glucosamine hydrochloride is a
bit more dense than the sulfate form, that is, it has a lower molecular
weight. Therefore, you get a little more glucosamine for the same weight
unit in the HCl form than in the sulfate form. The HCl form is about 20%
more expensive than the sulfate form, but it is better tolerated by
animals and is therefore typically used in animal preparations. Other
than that, there is really no difference between the two forms of
glucosamine.
Q: How safe is ARTHRIX®?
A: All ingredients used in ARTHRIX
for Dogs and Cats are of human grade purity and are widely recommended
by many medical doctors and veterinarians. No negative effects have ever
been associated with the use of ARTHRIX for Dogs and Cats, even at
abnormally high dosages. ARTHRIX is a nutraceutical product. It is not a
drug. Accidental over dosage of as much as 180
tablets (the maximum number of tablets tested in a single consumption)
did not result in any adverse effects. ARTHRIX is a nutraceutical
product. It is not a drug. Traditional veterinary drugs are sometimes
harmful. To read more about this, please click on Old Dog Project,
or read this recent article in the Wall Street Journal.
Q: How many tablets
of ARTHRIX® should I give my
dog or my cat?
A: The suggested use depends on
your pet's size as shown on the product label. Give one to five chewable
tablets in the morning or evening, whenever your pet is fed.

Q:
How long should my dog or cat take ARTHRIX® for Dogs and
Cats?
A: ARTHRIX is
typically taken for the life of your pet. Animals with poor mobility
will benefit if you give ARTHRIX for Dogs and Cats on a daily basis.
ARTHRIX for Dogs and Cats also is an important nutrition for young and
healthy animals, and will promote a healthy skin and coat, and optimal
joint maintenance.
Q: What
should I do to keep my pet pain free after starting him/her on ARTHRIX®
for
Dogs and Cats?
A: A well balanced nutritious diet is essential for maintaining your
dog's or cat's health. Only use a high quality food. Moderate
activity also is essential for the long-term well being of your older
pet. Do not over exercise your old dog, even though he or she seems to
act like a young dog again! Too much exercise may harm your dog. In
times of need, it is safe to give some extra tablets of ARTHRIX for a
few days.
Q: My cat does
not seem to like ARTHRIX®. What can I do?
A: While most dogs love ARTHRIX, cats tend to be more fussy eaters
and some cats plain refuse it (although most cats like Arthrix). There
are many good ways of offering ARTHRIX in case they don't accept them
readily. The easiest may be to crumble the tablet by hand and mix them
with their food. The tablets are scored for easy breakage. You can also
try mixing with a wet food. Start with a little and slowly increase the
amount to get your cat used to the taste.
